When Matthew Koma was growing up in NY, he was smashing plastic guitars to Bruce Springsteen’s MTV “unPLUGGED” commercials and having band practice with his imaginary band in his parent’s living room. With an eclectic soundtrack, provided by hardcore and punk shows his brother took him to and his parents’ collection of Tom Petty and Joe Jackson records, it’s no wonder Matthew Koma’s debut record is equally as hybrid.
“I’ve always wanted to take what I’ve learned, from Bruce’s story telling and Costello’s melodies/word play, and contrast it with production that was out of my comfort zone. For me, stretching the boundaries of what’s comfortable and predictable is what makes it worth while and exciting.”
